Notes from Ames Animal Services

Guinea pigs are small, gentle, social creatures and can be great pets. Before adopting a guinea pig, make sure you and your family are up for the commitment. Guinea pigs live for about 5 to 7 years and need daily attention and time out of their cage. They need companionship and do best living in pairs. You'll need startup supplies like a large cage and food and water bowls, plus there will be ongoing expenses for high-quality food, bedding material and vet care. If you're ready to get a guinea pig (or two), give us a call at 515.239.5530 to determine if a guinea pig might be the right pet for you!

What happens next

  1. Contact Ames Animal Services using the button. AdoptNearby does not take applications.
  2. They will send you their application or ask a few questions about your home.
  3. Most organizations arrange a meet, sometimes a home visit, then a small adoption fee that usually covers spay or neuter and vaccines. That fee is paid to Ames Animal Services, never to AdoptNearby.
