Meet Speedy! Your New Adventure Buddy! ❤️
Say hello to Speedy , a big, handsome red-footed tortoise with a BIG personality! At 10–11 years old and 15 pounds, this sweet guy is full of curiosity, loves being around people, and wants to be right in the middle of whatever is happening. He’ll happily follow people and even dogs around because he doesn’t want to miss out on the action! He enjoys gentle pets on his head and under his chin, and he absolutely loves getting outside to explore.
And don’t let that tortoise shell fool you… Speedy can move FAST! ♂️ He’s a fun, social, curious little guy who makes a wonderful companion for someone ready to give him the life he deserves.
What Speedy Needs in His Forever Home
Speedy is a tropical tortoise with specific care needs, so his future family needs to be prepared to provide the right environment, diet, and daily interaction.
Room to roam: Speedy needs an extra-large enclosure with 4–6 inches of substrate so he can dig and explore. He loves the outdoors and will need plenty of safe outdoor time during warmer months. When temperatures drop, he must come inside to a properly heated and humid environment.
☀️ Proper lighting, heat, and humidity: Speedy needs appropriate UVA/UVB lighting and a warm, humid habitat to stay healthy.
A healthy diet: His diet should include fresh greens daily, roughly an amount about the size of his shell, along with fruit and appropriate protein sources such as worms or hard-boiled eggs. Fruit should make up about 30% of his diet, with protein around 10%, as part of his established feeding plan.
A place to soak: He needs a large, shallow water dish for soaking. Speedy cannot swim, so the water must be shallow and only a couple of inches deep at most, with a safe way for him to get in and out.
❤️ Time, attention, and adventure: Speedy is a social guy who needs regular interaction, opportunities to exercise, and time outside his enclosure to explore safely. He cannot spend every day sitting in his enclosure without interaction or enrichment. He wants to be part of the family!
⏳ A lifelong commitment: Red-footed tortoises can live approximately 50–80 years. Adopting Speedy means planning for a very long-term commitment and ensuring he’ll always have the care he needs.
