Notes from Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County

Torque is an energetic, pushy, Sable German Shepherd dog. He is just a year old so in the adolescent phase of development. If you've ever had a young German Shepherd, and a young SABLE German Shepherd, you understand the level of energy and attitude this young man has. This is probably how he found himself an unclaimed stray. He's a big boy too, at 76 lbs and not done growing. Torque has an osteoid (bone growth) on his left front leg. Multiple veterinarians have evaluated it and determined it is NOT cancerous, but is likely from an injury that was not treated prior to his entering the shelter system. We have been advised there isn't much to do for it. Torque does not favor that leg, and does not appear to be in any pain. It certainly doesn't slow him down. Torque doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but he is a handful, and not a good fit for adopters that don't have real training and behavior molding experience with strong working breeds. Torque does well with other dogs, as long as they correct him appropriately. Smaller dogs or cats aren't a good match for Torque at this point unless they are kept in a totally separate area from him. His play style is very rough with lots of stomping and mouthing. Again, he's not being mean, he's just a teenager with a lot of energy and an inability to understand how big he actually is. His fosters often intervene in his play to prevent him from being too much for other dogs. Torque responds well to training. He LOVES toys and prefers those as rewards to treats. He is fostered at Camp Merricks and has learned a lot: crate trained, impulse control, basic manners, leash work. To be clear, Torque will need continued training and structure to be his best self. Left to his own devices he will be a BIG problem. We will be screening adopters carefully. If you are interested in meeting this gorgeous boy, put in an application and we will forward it on to Camp Merricks for evaluation and potential meet and greets.
