Notes from Volunteers for Animals

Morgan is a young adult, spayed, 40-pound female pit bull with a sweet and affectionate personality. She loves going for walks, but since she is quite strong, a no- pull harness is a must. Given the choice between playtime and cuddles, Morgan usually chooses playtime, but will settle in for snuggle time once she has exhausted herself. This stunning girl is highly treat-motivated and is learning to sit and wait patiently for her favorites. Morgan seems to get along with other dogs, but is not a huge fan of cats. Morgan is currently enrolled in the Path to Home Program and will be available for adoption after her training is complete in November.

Volunteers For Animals and Orleans Correctional Facility have developed a Dog Training & Fostering Program within the prison that will provide socialization and basic obedience training for the dogs before being adopted. Volunteers For Animals will be pulling dogs from high kill shelters and locally who may be in need of behavioral support to become more adoptable. The dogs will then be transported to Orleans Correctional Facility where they will live with selected inmates who will care for them 24 hours per day for approximately 8 weeks. Each dog will have a crate, bedding, leash, collar, training treats, and food provided by Volunteers For Animals. A certified dog trainer will provide weekly training classes for the dogs and the inmates. The inmates will then work daily to reinforce the formal training with the dogs. Adoption Procedures The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the Path to Home animals are $200 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. All of the dogs are current on vaccines, heart worm tested and spayed/neutered. If you would like to be considered for any of the Path to Home dogs, please email us. Please do not call the Shelter regarding Path to Home animals - they do not have any information. If you would like more information, please Contact Us.

What happens next

  1. Contact Volunteers for Animals using the button. AdoptNearby does not take applications.
  2. They will send you their application or ask a few questions about your home.
  3. Most organizations arrange a meet, sometimes a home visit, then a small adoption fee that usually covers spay or neuter and vaccines. That fee is paid to Volunteers for Animals, never to AdoptNearby.
  4. Read the dogs care guide so you arrive prepared.
