Meet Erwin, a 4-year-old, 58-pound German Shepherd mix who has mastered the art of being an easygoing gentleman. Erwin is exceptionally easy to leash, walk, and handle. He walks beautifully on leash, rides well in the car, and is calm and quiet in public. He enjoys his sniffaris, taking time to investigate all the fascinating smells along the way. And wherever he goes, people seem to notice what a lovely dog he is. But Erwin's greatest quality may be his gentle, affectionate nature. He leans in for pets, takes treats softly, and loves being around people. According to the volunteer who has spent multiple days and nights with him, he is house-trained, settles calmly in the home, and has shown no destructive behavior. He doesn't need to be the center of attention or keep everyone entertained. He's simply happy to be good company. And children? Erwin absolutely lights up around them! His volunteer reports that he becomes a different, especially happy dog when he sees or even hears children. He could be a wonderful addition to a family with children, with appropriate supervision and introductions, of course. Erwin has also been friendly with other dogs he has encountered at close range. He even met his volunteer's cat and slept peacefully alongside the cat. As with any dog, introductions to resident pets should be handled thoughtfully. His outings with a volunteer have shown what a relaxed, affectionate companion he can be outside the kennel. He may not know every basic cue yet, but he's gentle, easy to handle, and a pleasure to have around. Erwin isn't looking for a life of adventure and excitement. He's looking for his people.
