Notes from Burlington County Animal Alliance

Meet Sheba! This sweet Beagle mix is about 2 years old and weighs around 33 pounds. And after almost two months in her foster home, we are so happy to say that Sheba has completely blossomed! When Sheba first came to us after spending more than a year in a shelter, she was incredibly scared and shut down. But with patience, love, and the safety of a foster home, she has discovered that life can actually be pretty wonderful. And now we’re getting to see the playful, affectionate, silly girl who was hiding underneath all that fear. Sheba is fully house trained and fully crate trained, and she is an incredibly well-behaved girl inside the house. She isn’t a high-energy dog, but she absolutely loves having time to play. Give her some toys and she will happily entertain herself by throwing them in the air, rolling around with them, or settling down with a good bone. Her favorite activity, though, might be playing with other dogs! She loves to play chase and roughhouse with canine friends who enjoy the same kind of play. Sheba has excellent doggy manners and social cues and does well with dogs of all sizes. A playful dog would be a wonderful match for her. She has also discovered that walks are pretty awesome! She loves getting out and sniffing all the new smells along the way. She does pull a little on leash, but her foster is working with her and she is continuing to improve. She currently requires a securely fenced yard because she is not comfortable pottying while on leash. Inside, Sheba is such an easy companion. She loves curling up on the couch and being right beside her foster. She isn’t a big barker and will generally only speak up if someone knocks on the door or another dog starts barking. She also sleeps peacefully and is perfectly happy relaxing with her people. Sheba is still a little nervous when someone reaches toward her unexpectedly, so she does best with people who understand that she may need a little time to warm up. She is especially good with kids who know to take things slowly with her at first. In fact, Sheba has even surprised some of the kids she has met at adoption events by giving them a sweet little kiss. She may still be nervous at busy adoption events, but that is not the real Sheba. Her true personality comes shining through when she is comfortable — especially when she is in a fenced yard playing with other dogs, tossing around her toys, or snuggling next to her foster. Her floppy ears, curly tail, playful personality, and sweet nature make her impossible not to love. Sheba has filled out beautifully and is now at a healthy weight, and watching her transformation over the past two months has been incredible. She went from a frightened, shut-down dog to a playful, affectionate girl who loves toys, walks, dogs, cuddles, and simply being near her people. She just needs someone who will continue to give her the patience and understanding that have helped her blossom. In return, you’ll get a sweet, funny, playful companion who will show you more of her personality every day.
