Notes from Orange County Animal Services

I came to the shelter when my previous owner could no longer care for me. I am a more reserved dog and my previous owner reports I can be protective of the people I bond with. I am warming up the staff but need a home with a patient owner willing to work with me. Slow introductions to (or homes without) kids and other dogs is recommended to give me the quiet space I need to adjust. My friends at the shelter report that I am super cuddly and eager to please, and a really good listener! Insights from my adventure buddies and foster friends:I spent a few hours with Canelo on a dog day out. He's the best! I wasn't sure about the vibes when I saw him in the kennel but he was super friendly from the get-go when he came out. Canelo is a big boy with a big personality and he's a lot of fun to be around. He is affectionate, playful, and also VERY treat-motivated. It was just me and Canelo at my house so I wasn't able to see how he reacts to many different situations, but he did demonstrate some protective instincts when someone dropped off a package at the front door and again in the Starbucks drive-through, where I took him for a pup cup. Canelo may not be the right dog for every lifestyle but he could absolutely be a great fit for someone in search of a loyal companion who will also keep them safe. Canelo is such a sweetheart! He's definitely a big dog and does pull, growl, and bark at other dogs and people when he saw them while going potty or on a walk. He was so cuddly at night and slept on my pillow the whole time. Anytime I turned the TV on, he tended to growl and bark at it -- I was able to calm him down so he would lay down. He did chew on some things that he should not be chewing when I left him alone for a bit. He'll need time and patient people to help him adjust, but he's a great dog. You can tell he has such a big heart. He followed me around my apartment, always curious about what I was doing. And even at roughly 70 lbs, he thinks he's a lap dog! Cuddly on the couch and at night, so sweet!
