Notes from Detroit Animal Care and Control

GIANT PUPPY ALERT! -Imagine a 5-month-old puppy… now multiply that puppy by about 5 and you’ve got this 71-POUND GOOFBALL! -At first, he wasn’t navigating the floors very well, so I thought I might actually be able to handle him. HA! He quickly got the hang of things and proceeded to drag me around like I was a tiny accessory on his leash. This boy is STRONG and will need a confident handler who can handle his enthusiastic, extra-large puppy antics.-Manners? Still buffering. Spatial awareness? Absolutely none. Personal space? What’s that? Your lap is his lap, your face is his personal kissing booth, and your shoulders are apparently the perfect place to put his paws while he lovingly pins you in place. He’s harmless, just blissfully unaware that he’s built like a small refrigerator and acts like a toddler who just discovered he has legs.-He likes treats and will eventually offer a sit once he remembers he has the ability to do so. He tries to jump up for snacks at first, but he can be convinced to put his booty on the ground. Taking treats from hands is a bit of a group project. He’s gentle, but his coordination could use some work, and he tends to accidentally gum your fingers while trying to figure out where the treat went. Oh, and did I mention the drool? Keep a towel handy. -Toys weren’t really his thing during our time together. He was much more interested in being a 71-pound lap dog with absolutely no understanding of his own size.-This big, goofy baby is going to need someone strong, patient, and ready to work on basic manners. He’s not going to be the right fit for everyone, but if you’ve ever wanted a puppy who can reach the kitchen counter without trying, congratulations! You may have found your guy.
