Notes from Prince Georges County Animal Management Division

Toya is a very sweet dog and is the ideal pet for many. She is very quiet and enjoys relaxing next to her human but also would make an excellent jogging, hiking and walking partner. She is very intelligent and responds well to both verbal and leash correction. She knows basic commands like sit, stay and come. She also seems to be picking up heel, place and leave it quickly. She walks very well on a leash using either a harness or a collar and consistently makes eye contact with her human for guidance. She doesn't pull, even when using a harness. She walks close by and maintains mostly a slack leash. Toya does not appear to bark or make any reactive sounds even when excited. She doesn't bark at people or dogs walking by even when they bark at her. She seems to be friendly towards other dogs and people she comes across. She does have a skittish personality. She isn't reactive to loud sounds like a vacuum, music, TV or something falling and is very comfortable in her home and yard, but she does seem to get overstimulated on walks if there is a lot going on. She may jump and dart randomly until she can assess what spooked her which is why a harness may be ideal for her. She also responds quickly to verbal comforting, praise and looks to her human for reassurance after being spooked. She likely will overcome this anxiety through gradual exposure. She does not show any aggression and is generally quiet and gentle. Potential adopters should expect her to be very skeptical the first day or two and experience separation anxiety for the first week until she adapts to her new home and routine.
