Notes from Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter

Meet Dazie, the Pyrenees mix. Dazie came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She lived in a home with another dog around her size. She really enjoyed the companionship of another dog around. She seems to gain confidence in following in the lead of other dogs so a home with a canine companion would be enriching to her life. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Dazie has been around children (around age 5 years) in the previous home and did well. Due to some prey drive observed in the previous home, a home free of felines is required. Dazie can be nervous and unsure in new environments and with new people. With time and patience, we anticipate she will blossom. To keep her safe, adopters should not allow her to be outdoors unsupervised or off leash unattended as she has scaled fences 6 to 7 feet tall. Dazie is reported to be potty trained and eager to bnd with her new family through positive reinforcement based training. On Saturday, October 31st, the Shelter is celebrating Halloween through an “Adopt Your Boo” special. This dog’s adoption fee will be reduced to $31. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
