Notes from Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter

Meet Mowgli, the 7 year old Australian Shepherd mix. Mowgli arrived to the Shelter as a stray so we don’t know about his life before the Shelter. He has been observed to be affectionate and easy going since his arrival. He arrived very dirty but has gotten a bath since his arrival. Staff have observed that Mowgli shows signs of being potty trained – holding it until he goes outside. This gentle guy met a few dogs at the Shelter and did well on common ground, but once at home and comfortable, he has shown behaviors that imply he wants to be the only dog. He is very people focused and engaging. We do not have any history of Mowgli with children or other animals. On Saturday, October 31st, the Shelter is celebrating Halloween through an “Adopt Your Boo” special. This dog’s adoption fee will be reduced to $31. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
