Notes from Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter

Meet Draco, the French Bulldog mix. Although just under 40#, Draco is a small, compact dog. He came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after his previous guardian became homeless and was unable to continue caring for him. Draco is currently in a foster home with a couple and their senior cat. The foster reports: `It’s been a little over a week since I brought Draco home and he is a completely different pup. He is very calm, loves car rides and going for walks. He does great on leash. He is very playful, especially if there is a ball in front of him. I would not recommend long walks and playtime, I have been taking him on 15 minutes walks 3 times a day, quick ball time in the backyard and he is a happy boy. He is house trained and sits by the door whenever he needs to go, sleeps through the night and snores A LOT!! Overall he is a happy boy.` Draco has been left alone while in the foster home and was happily napping on the couch when the foster returned. He has met a variety of people and other dogs out on walks in the neighborhood. Although he will sometimes bark at dogs on leash, he has befriended many of the neighborhood pups. ..but does not like to share food or other relevant items, so he should be the only dog in the home Draco is a brachycephalic dog (a short nosed dog). His future guardians should be familiar with the medical concerns related to brachycephalic dogs and have the resources (time, finances, etc) to address any long-term care of lifestyle modifications that he needs after adoption. Draco's adoption fee has been sponsored by the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter Foundation's Leave No One Behind fund - a fund that draws adopter's eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
