Notes from Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter

Meet Sky Blue, the brown and white puppy. Sky Blue arrived to the Shelter with his 7 littermates as strays. They were found in a rural part of South County by some apple orchards by a good Samaritan. After being brought to safety, some pups went to foster care until they were of age for adoption. Sky Blue and his three siblings have been getting TLC and care by staff and volunteers. Typical to pups their age, they are still perfecting life skills and manners like potty training and age appropriate socialization. Sky Blue will thrive in a home that have the ability to provide the above average care that puppies need through mental and physical stimulation as well as positive reinforcement based training. Sky Blue may do well in a home with other animals provided there is a slow, thoughtful introduction. We encourage any resident dogs to meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Due to some observed resource guarding in a previous home, Sky Blue is not recommended to go to a home with young children. On Saturday, October 31st, the Shelter is celebrating Halloween through an “Adopt Your Boo” special. This dog’s adoption fee will be reduced to $31. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
