Notes from San Jose Animal Care Center

10/21/26 18:15From the foster home:I had the absolute pleasure of fostering Paloma for the Pitjama sleepover party. I enjoyed her stay so much that I decided to keep her for a couple extra days. Here are some notes I made of her during her stay. Potty trained: Once she figured out the routine and the backyard was the place to go bathroom. She able to sleep through the night and hold her pee until the morning. House broken: as she did not chew on any of the furniture or excessively run around at any point. She also did not mess with any of my shoes or clothes which I did have laying on the ground. I left her alone in my house for a max of 35 min; she did not chew or bark but did not necessarily relax and lay down. Not crate trained. I did put treats and her toys in her crate for positive association; she did retrieve her toys and treats from there on the third night. She is not food motivated and prefers pets. On the third day she was showing her love of toys. She knew which toys were hers and did not touch any of my stuffed animals which I did have laying around. She is extremely people friendly! She has met my brother, his girlfriend, my grandparents, my aunt, and cousin. She may need slow intros when people enter the house that she deems her territory. We were in my house alone for 2.5 days and on the third night my uncle came home and she did growl and bark, I leashed her and let her go up to him and sniff and she was okay after that. She did not bark or growl when my neighbors were in their backyard but she would growl very intermittently when she would hear people outside when she would sleep near me at night. Dog friendliness/tolerance: I am not sure. We went to several parks. There were several instances that she was able to walk past dogs with about 6 feet apart and keep to herself and continue walking. She was also able to walk behind a dog on a trail with no issues. We were also at a field and a dog off leash was running straight to her and I was able to turn and walk the opposite direction without her noticing. She also was able to be in the shelter lobby with another dog without much issue. However, she was showing mild reactivity when she was walking head on toward a dog and if she is not moving and this allows her to lock in and show some pulling and sometimes growling. Combined with the previous paragraph’s info, she either needs slow intros or has great potential to work with a trainer with this possible reactivity. She’s a low to medium energy dog. She was happy to 30 min-1 hour walks and would nap after. She is also such a cuddle bug who is happiest when she is in your lap to snuggle. She was a wonderful companion. I completed chores around the house and she was happy to just hang out watching me and resting. She also showed a playful side on the third and fourth day I had her. She did some zoomies in the backyard and brought me her toy that she played fetch with. After 5 throws and still somewhat excited she was able to calm down and go to bed. I think anyone would be lucky to welcome her into their homes and lives.
