Notes from Help A Dog Smile

Thank you for your interest in adopting from us! We would love to introduce you to Baby, a sweet 12-14 year-old senior female Chihuahua who came to our rescue after her previous owner became ill and could no longer care for her.

Personality & Behavior

Baby can be cautious around new people at first, but once she bonds with you, she is fiercely loyal. She enjoys being near her human companion without needing to be right on top of you. Her favorite activities include sunbathing in the yard, sitting near you on the sofa, napping, and enjoying her meals. She is also very well-behaved when left alone while you run errands.

Compatibility

Baby gets along well with other small dogs. While she no longer plays with them, she enjoys their company. She would also do wonderfully as an only dog.

Home Environment Needs

Baby is very vocal and barks when visitors enter the home to protect her person, though her foster mom has successfully trained her not to bark at outside noises. Because of her barking and protective nature, she requires a quiet home without frequent visitors and is not suited for apartments, townhomes, or condos.

Health & Medical Care

- Heart Condition: Baby has a grade 5/6 heart murmur managed with daily medication. Her recent October 2026 X-rays and bloodwork show her heart medication is working well.

- Joint Care: X-rays revealed a dislocated right patella and hip arthritis. Due to her heart condition, surgery is not recommended, so she takes pain medication to keep her comfortable and mobile.

- General: Baby is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations.

Her adoption fee is $200, which helps offset our rescue's medical expenses. If you live in the Phoenix metro area and feel Baby would be a great fit for your home, please complete an application here: helpadogsmile.org/adoption-application/.

*Please note that the application is not a commitment to adopt–it is a tool used to help determine if a dog and applicant would make a good match. Applications are forwarded to the foster family for review and follow-up.

What happens next

  1. Contact Help A Dog Smile using the button. AdoptNearby does not take applications.
  2. They will send you their application or ask a few questions about your home.
  3. Most organizations arrange a meet, sometimes a home visit, then a small adoption fee that usually covers spay or neuter and vaccines. That fee is paid to Help A Dog Smile, never to AdoptNearby.
  4. Read the dogs care guide so you arrive prepared.
