Notes from Matanuska-Susitna Borough Animal Care and Regulation

Coco is a happy, playful boy with a big heart and a brain that loves to be put to work! This handsome guy is learning just how rewarding it can be to slow down, focus, and work alongside his people. He knows “sit,” “lay down,” and “wait,” and he genuinely enjoys learning new things. With positive reinforcement, consistency, and a little patience, Coco has so much potential to continue growing into an amazing companion. Coco recently returned to the shelter after discovering that he wasn’t the best match for a dominant, strong-willed female dog in his adoptive home. While that relationship didn’t work out, Coco has continued to do well meeting other dogs here and has passed multiple dog-to-dog meet-and-greets! He seems to do best with tolerant canine friends who can match his playful energy, and we’ll require a meet-and-greet with any potential canine siblings to help make sure everyone is a good fit. One thing we’ve learned about Coco is how much he loves connecting with his people. He’s done wonderfully on our Miles & Mutts adventures, enjoying the opportunity to get out, explore, and spend quality time with his favorite humans. He’s an active boy who will thrive with a positive outlet for his energy, whether that means walks, adventures, playtime, or learning something new. A predictable routine, clear expectations, and a little mental enrichment will go a long way in helping Coco feel settled and successful. He’s also doing well with leash walking, appears to be potty trained, and responds to redirection when he gets a little distracted by the excitement around him. Like any dog moving into a new home, Coco will need time to learn and adjust. Cats, however, are a little too interesting for Coco, so a feline-free home would be best. Coco doesn’t need to be the life of the party every minute of the day. He just needs a family willing to give him the structure, stability, and opportunities to be his best self. In return, you’ll get a sweet, playful companion who loves being included, enjoys learning alongside his people, and has so much love to give. Coco is ready for a fresh start with a family who sees his potential and is excited to help him reach it!
