Notes from A Voice for All Paws, Inc.

Meet Duke: A Tiny Orange Dictator With BoundariesDuke is a young orange cat with strong opinions, a low tolerance for nonsense, and absolutely no interest in pretending to be someone he isn’t. Pulled from DAS after coming from a hoarding situation, Duke was placed at the shelter for safekeeping during an investigation. The shelter environment was not his time to shine. He did not flourish there, and he made his feelings about handling very clear—especially when it came time to get into a carrier. “Cooperative” would not be an accurate word. Duke enjoys being stroked with the direction of his fur. Against the grain? Absolutely not. Scratching is generally forbidden, with perhaps a brief exception around the ears—but even there, your access is limited. Weirdly, belly rubs are sometimes acceptable, because Duke is apparently committed to keeping everyone slightly confused. When he has decided the interaction is over, he may conclude it with a modest nom. He also occasionally delivers a nail-free skippity bap as a reminder that personal space is not optional. He naps with his eyes open, sometimes with the tip of his tongue sticking out, because apparently even sleeping must be done dramatically. He strongly dislikes brooms and mops, which he considers suspicious household enemies. Duke is not a beginner cat, a “pick me up whenever” cat, or a cat for someone seeking unlimited cuddles on demand. He needs a patient adopter who understands feline body language, respects boundaries, and will let him build trust at his own pace. A calm, predictable home would suit him best—preferably one without small children, rough handling, or an aggressive cleaning-supply agenda. He has come leaps and bounds from the fully untouchable cat at DAS and very cutely is trying to decide how to procure more attention. In return, you’ll get an extremely entertaining orange cat with plenty of personality, excellent comedic timing, and the potential to become a loyal companion once he realizes you are trustworthy. Duke isn’t looking for someone to change him. He’s looking for someone who appreciates a cat with boundaries, attitude, and a very specific user manual.
