Notes from Revelation Gardens

Denim and Lace have taught us what can happen when shy cats are simply given time.

They came to Revelation Gardens as kittens with their mama, who was nursing them while also pregnant. She soon gave birth to nine more kittens—making for one very busy mama and one very full house.

Denim and Lace were eventually adopted together, but their adoption lasted only about twelve hours. They did what frightened cats often do when suddenly placed in an unfamiliar environment: they hid. They were returned before they had much opportunity to understand their new surroundings or begin to feel safe.

Back at Revelation Gardens, they’ve had something different: time without pressure.

And we’ve seen what a difference that makes.

Denim and Lace are shy, but that isn’t their whole story. When we enter their cabin and simply sit with them, giving them the opportunity to approach on their own terms, they come out. They seek attention and enjoy spending time with people. Denim is the more trusting of the two, while Lace needs additional time before she feels secure.

That’s why their next home—if the right one comes along—needs to understand that twelve hours won’t tell you who these two are.

They will likely hide at first. They may hide for quite some time. Their person will need to offer them a quiet space, predictable routines, patience, and the freedom to decide when they’re ready to begin exploring and connecting.

We’re not looking for someone willing to try Denim and Lace. We’re looking for someone willing to commit to them while they adjust.

Denim and Lace have a home at Revelation Gardens for as long as they need one. But we’ve seen enough of who they are when they feel safe to know that, with an extraordinarily patient person, these two could have a wonderful home of their own.

They don’t need to become braver before they’re worthy of a home. They need a home patient enough to let trust happen in its own time.
