Notes from Paws and Prayers

Meet Fritatta, he is 2-3 years young and a shy guy who prefers to take life—and people—at his own pace. He’s still pretty unsure about us humans, but there is one very reliable way to get his attention: crack open a can of wet food and suddenly you’re much more interesting. He’s also a curious little guy, and that curiosity gives us hope that with time, patience, and a calm home, he’ll continue to come out of his shell. He would do best in a quiet, adult-only home with no kids, where nobody expects him to be a social butterfly overnight. He’s looking for someone willing to let him settle in on his terms—and maybe keep the wet food coming.

While Fritatta is FIV-positive, it is not contagious to humans or other animals. It is safe for him to live with other kitties who are not FIV+. He takes Lysine daily to help support his immune system, and this medication will need to continue in his new home.

Many FIV-infected cats can live happily with the virus for a long time, and in some cats, the virus may never cause illness. Whether disease develops depends on several factors including the strain of FIV a cat is infected with, the cat’s immune response, and the presence or absence of other infections.

The main aims of managing an FIV infection are to prevent further spread of infection to other cats and to maintain a good quality of life for the infected cat.

General and supportive treatment includes:

Neutering all FIV-infected cats to reduce the risk of fighting and the spread of infection

Keeping FIV-positive cats indoors and keeping them away from non-infected cats. This helps prevent the spread of infection to other cats and reduces exposure of the FIV-infected cat to other infections.

In stable homes where cats don’t fight, the risk of spread of infection is low

Feeding good quality, commercial cat food and avoiding raw meat, eggs and unpasteurized dairy products

Maintaining routine preventive healthcare (regular flea and worm control, routine vaccinations etc.)

Veterinary health checks twice yearly. Your vet may recommend certain blood tests periodically to monitor your cat’s health

Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment of any secondary or concurrent diseases

Fritatta’s adoption fee is $145.00 Please complete a non-obligatory application at www.pawsandprayers.org

Paws and Prayers cats are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, FIV/FeLV tested (positive for FIV), dewormed, current on flea/tick prevention, and microchipped at the time of adoption. They are litterbox trained unless otherwise noted. Please be aware we do not walk around standing & holding our shelter cats - this is unnatural to them and we like to keep them as comfortable as possible.
