Notes from Midwest Pet Refuge

Meet Barley. She and her three siblings were found near a grain terminal, which is how she got her name. This tiny kitten came to us with two broken back legs, but you’d never know it from her personality. Barley leans her whole head into your hand like she’s trying to get as close as possible. She purrs constantly, loves attention, and has stayed gentle and trusting through everything she’s been through. One of her legs has now been surgically repaired, and the vet believes the other should heal on its own. She’ll need multiple follow‑up visits to make sure her bones heal correctly, and she’ll remain in our care until her recovery is complete. Barley is accepting applications now, but she won’t be ready to go home until her leg is fully healed and cleared by our vet. If you’re looking for a resilient, affectionate kitten with a big heart, Barley may be the girl for you. Meet Our Fabulous Foster-to-Adopt Kittens! Our young kittens are ready to go home now through our foster‑to‑adopt program. You take them home today, and the adoption is finalized after their spay/neuter surgery. Our rescue requires kittens to be adopted in pairs or into a home that already has a young, friendly cat. Kittens raised alone often struggle with social and behavioral development, while growing up with another cat helps them learn boundaries, burn energy, and become well‑adjusted adults. The adoption fee is $75 for a single cat/kitten and $125 for a pair. If you’re ready to bring home a pair of playful kittens—or add one to your friendly resident cat—we’d love to help you find the right match. Apply today at www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt to start your foster‑to‑adopt journey! Just a quick note—she's currently in foster care, not at the shelter, so she won't be available for walk-in visits. If you'd like to meet her, we'll need to schedule a meet and greet in advance. Let us know what days work best for you, and we’ll be happy to coordinate! If you are interested in adopting this pet, please go to www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt to complete an application. Completing a questionnaire on any other website does not submit an application to our rescue, you must complete one on our website. If you have any questions, please email us at adopt@MidwestPetRefuge.com

What happens next

  1. Contact Midwest Pet Refuge using the button. AdoptNearby does not take applications.
  2. They will send you their application or ask a few questions about your home.
  3. Most organizations arrange a meet, sometimes a home visit, then a small adoption fee that usually covers spay or neuter and vaccines. That fee is paid to Midwest Pet Refuge, never to AdoptNearby.
  4. Read the cats care guide so you arrive prepared.
