Notes from Berkeley Animal Care Services
Luca is a special cat who will need the right home for him to thrive. He was originally surrendered by his owner, in part due to behavior, and he stayed at the shelter for a month while staff worked with him. He was adopted and then returned the following day. Since then, he has been in foster and has made a lot of progress, but he is not a lap cat or a cuddler, and most likely never will be. That said, he is a fun and active boy who loves to play with a wand toy, plays fetch with his springy toy, loves spending time outside in the backyard, and has made friends with the resident 75lb pit bull. Luca can get overstimulated by petting at times and may react by biting hands and kicking with his back legs, sometimes with little warning. We are working on that with him, and there has been some progress in desensitizing him to touch. He has gotten more comfortable with petting and now seems to enjoy it, even seeking it out at times. He may not be the ideal sidekick yet, but he is definitely a good shadow and will follow you around the house. He wants to be around you, even if he doesn’t want to be touched. He did not get along with the cats in his original home, so he needs a home with no other cats. But he has lived previously with a dog and has become friends with the resident pit bull, though neither quite understands the other's playing style yet. He should also be in a home with no young kids, and all members of the household should be familiar with cat body language and experienced with cats. He's not going to be a typical cat, at least not for some time, but for someone who appreciates his personality, respects his boundaries, and doesn't expect a cuddly lap cat, he could make a great companion to someone living alone or a couple.
