Notes from Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter

Meet the Squash Kittens! Named after some of our favorite kinds of squash, these adorable kittens may need a little time to warm up—but once they feel safe, their curiosity starts to shine. When first meeting new people, the Squash Kittens can be cautious or unsure. They’re learning that gentle voices, patient humans, and a little extra time can lead to wonderful things. As they settle in, their natural curiosity takes over, and they may begin approaching for interaction, play, and affection on their own terms. These kittens will do best with adopters who understand and respect feline body language and are willing to let trust develop at each kitten’s own pace. Giving them space when they need it, watching for their signals, and celebrating those small moments of bravery will help them blossom into confident companions. If you’re looking for kittens who will reward your patience with growing trust, playful curiosity, and plenty of personality, come meet the Squash Kittens! Butternut is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. On Saturday, October 31st, the Shelter is celebrating Halloween through an “Adopt Your Boo” special. This cat’s adoption fee is reduced to $31.Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
